Shear Beauty – Spring Fashions

Photography by Joel Dryer

Spring is here! Whether you prefer a crystal studded ball gown or a form-fitting lace mermaid, these dresses are sure to add a little “spring” to your step, as you walk down the aisle.

In addition, Tony Allen and Von Criswell work their magic on hair and makeup to complete these show-stopping looks, while revealing trade secrets that will make you look your best on your big day.

The Hair: For Mary’s look, Tony used a ton of curls, back combing, hair spray and more hairspray! Then he pulled one side up and back giving her volume on the side. For Mary’s bang, he gave her a finger-wave using the curling iron, curled the ends and pinned in place.

*Tony’s Take: If you want curls to stay, pin them. Let them sit for hours. If you want loose curls or waves, then clip them seconds before you put on your dress, then pull the clips out and let the curls fall. If you want more volume, run a natural boar bristle brush lightly through them. The longer you let curls cool down, the longer they will last.

The Makeup: Mary’s baby blues really pop with this subtle blue smokey eye shadow. Von lined her entire eye with a vibrant navy eye pencil. Next, she topped the navy line with a basic black line. Using upward strokes, she merged the lines together being careful to leave a concentrated blue tone around the inner most corner of the eye.

*Von’s Vice: There is no short cut for blending when attempting a smokey eye. Patience, pressure and using the right brushes are critical.

To polish off her dramatic eye, Von secured a luscious strip of lashes. This look, while outstanding in person, looks beautiful on camera, which should be your main priority. Remember your wedding day will fly by, while your pictures will last a lifetime.

The Dress: This gown is breathtaking. The slim silhouette is created from a soft charmeuse satin and all over Venice lace. The neckline is a alluring, sweetheart shape encrusted with Swarovski crystals. The Hair: Two of Tony’s favorite things are pin curls and Velcro rollers. Both were used to create this soft, romantic look for Bracie. He loves the definition of a pin curl and adding height to the crown with Velcro rollers really created the classic look.

*Tony’s Take: A common problem when using Velcro rollers is controlling frizz, when taking them down. When the hair begins to frizz, do not panic. Reach for Bed Head After Party by TIGI. Put a small amount in your hand, rub your hands together and smooth the curls down. Finish by spraying Moroccanoil Hairspray, and your curls will turn out perfect.

The Makeup: Von gave Bracie a touch of old Hollywood glamor for this modern classic. Matte is the motto for this fresh look. Bracie’s soft eye contour features a well-blended fawn colored shadow in the crease with a soft vanilla as her highlighter. To keep maximum control, Von used a creme liner paired with a fine angle brush to create this precise winged eyeliner. Instead of a traditional red Hollywood glam lip, Von lined Bracie’s lips using a cool coral lip liner. She filled the entire lip area with liner to give Bracie a matte kiss.

*Vons Vice: Moisten your pout with your favorite lip balm before your make up application. Before you apply the lip liner, blot off any access and keep the lid on the gloss! Liner is the only tool you need for this matte mouth.

The Hair: For this classic braided up-do with a “twist,” Tony masterfully reverse braided the hair, pulling it towards the back and twisting it into a flower. Bracie’s bangs were then pinned-curled and held into place using hairspray and a bobby pin.

The Makeup: Von allowed Bracie’s braided up-do to set the tone for a fresh face. For the ultimate round eye, Von left Bracie’s bottom lash line completely bare. Her top lid featured a strong winged eye liner over a soft black smoke. Finishing the look with artificial lashes pared with soft lips and cheeks ensures the focus will stay on Bracie’s eyes.

*Vons Vice: Keeping the bottom lash line bare is an essential part of this look. While it may feel strange to not have mascara on the bottom, it’s essential as mascara on the lower lash line will look like a shadow or under-eye circles on film.
