Wedding Planning Timeline/Checklist


The steps from the engagement to the day you say “I do” are often stressful and overwhelming, but with careful planning the stress can be avoided by organizing and keeping a check-list. No matter what type of wedding you want – from a casual beach ceremony to a formal event – good management will allow you to enjoy the planning process. Do the homework, read articles, listen to advice, and keep things in perspective. Regardless of how perfectly everything unfolds, in the end, the most important thing is that you and your fiancé will be together.

12-10 Months

  • Discuss budget and decide how the expenses will be divided out
  • Consider the style of the wedding
  • Consider the number of guests for the ceremony and reception
  • Decide on a wedding date
  • Begin thinking about the location of the ceremony
  • Choose members of the wedding party
  • Begin compiling the guest list
  • Begin looking at dresses for inspiration
  • Send out save-the-dates

9-7 Months

  • Choose and order the wedding dress
  • Select bridal party’s outfits
  • Select gift registries
  • Begin exercise and skin care routine
  • Begin sampling cakes and scouting caterers
  • Research photographers to get a general idea of the photographic style you want
  • Get bids from several different florists
  • Begin scouting DJs and/or bands
  • Select an officiant
  • Discuss budget and options for the honeymoon

6-4 Months

  • Order bridesmaid’s dresses and outfits for groomsmen
  • Select and order the wedding bands
  • Meet and plan with selected vendors to discuss details about food, location, décor, music
  • Book the honeymoon trip
  • Order invitations, personal stationary, and wedding programs
  • Reserve rental transportation
  • Reserve necessary rentals including tables, chairs, linens, silverware, table decorations, etc.
  • Register for gifts with at least two or more bridal registries

3-2 Months

  • Solidify final guest list
  • Schedule the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner
  • Do trial runs with hair and make-up for the big day
  • Select wedding dress accessories, such as shoes and jewelry
  • Select attendant’s accessories
  • Mail the wedding invitations
  • Update all immunizations and physical exams

6-4 Weeks

4-2 Weeks

  • Submit list of photographs desired to the photographer
  • Submit play list to DJ/musicians
  • Schedule hair and make-up appointments
  • Get the marriage license
  • Arrange name changes on legal accounts and documents
  • Shop for a trousseau

Facial Treatment

1 Week

  • Make appointments for facials and waxing (these should be done at least 4 days before wedding)
  • Double check vendor details
  • Pick up the dress and wedding rings
  • Write out seating and place cards
  • Pack for honeymoon
  • Give the completed wedding day schedule to all attendants and photographer

One Day

  • Get manicure and pedicure
  • Double check last minute details
  • Designate someone to carry small emergency kit for touch-ups
  • Prepare tip envelopes for vendors and coordinators
  • Hold rehearsal and rehearsal dinner
  • Relax!

Wedding Day

  • Give the prepared gifts to groom
  • Eat something, preferably a light meal
  • Plan to be dressed with hair and makeup done 30 minutes before photographs
  • Make sure to take a deep breath and enjoy the process
  • Let your love shine!
